Walky creator David Willis joins Brian Kilby for an interview on Nightbeat, Jeff Simpson’s art and his favorite current toys. This January 28, 2001 Radio Free Cybertron also features HooperX’s Point the Blame, which takes aim at the Transformers: The Movie soundtrack. Zobovor rants about webmasters stealing content from other fan sites. Goldimus Prime finds Beast Machines Supreme Cheetor overpriced.
Trivia
Brian opens with trivia this week. The answer to the last clip was the Beast Wars episode “Bad Spark.” He names winners he missed because his email was down, including Greg Bashansky, Hot Rodimus, Starseeker and Alpha Omegius. A new clip airs twice.
ATT This Week
There is no ATT Buzz this week. Brian sums up alt.toys.transformers himself: talk of Car Robots coming to the U.S., pictures of toys like the Cycle Drone, and some drunken posting from a few Dutch fans. [Source: alt.toys.transformers]
Point the Blame
HooperX argues the Transformers: The Movie soundtrack stinks. He says $17 buys three nice score pieces, a Weird Al track added for marketing and six tracks of kid-friendly 1980s rock. He mocks Stan Bush’s “The Touch,” though he calls Bush a nice gentleman he met at BotCon 97. He closes with a jab at the Dutch fans who name-checked RFC in their posts.
RFC Announcements
HooperX’s tech spec is now in the staff section of the site. Brian invites link swaps and points new listeners to sample shows on the homepage, including the Anniversary Show and Turin’s reviews.
Interview: David Willis
David Willis, creator of the webcomic Walky, names Nightbeat his favorite character because of his brash chutzpah. He calls Simon Furman one of his greatest inspirations He also credits the dynamic, boxy style of one Marvel Transformers artist as his model for drawing the robots. Brian picks William Johnson as his favorite Marvel artist. Willis’s current favorite toys include Beast Machines Rattrap and Car Robots Super Mach Alert, his pick of the Car Brothers.
Zobovor’s Rant
Zobovor rants against webmasters who copy images and files from other fan sites, or link directly to them, without credit. He compares it to cutting a picture from a magazine into your own book. He says fan pages can justify using licensed images as a service, but stealing another fan’s original art is simply stealing.
Toy Review: Beast Machines Supreme Cheetor
Goldimus Prime says Supreme Cheetor stands 20 inches tall with his leg stilts extended, a few inches short of Fortress Maximus. His leg ratchets make the chicken-leg pose hard to balance. Gimmicks include a pump-action missile launcher with sounds, a mechanical jaw and extending power claws. He calls it a sturdy, well-sculpted toy for kids, but says it is worth $30 at most, not the Supreme price. Brian says he bought Supreme Cheetor this week but has not opened him.
Fan Fiction Reading
Weegee reads an MG Dinobot fan fiction from BotCon, in which Dinobot storms the Predacon base and falls to Megatron.
