The Transformers Hall of Fame names Peter Cullen and Bob Budiansky among its first inductees, and the crew finds a flaw in the fan vote. This live May 12, 2010 Radio Free Cybertron also covers Clench and War for Cybertron’s Punch-Counterpunch, the BotCon 2010 video and Pat Lee’s Newsarama interview. Brian Kilby, Rob Springer, John DeLuna, Exvee and Ender then pick the real people they’d put in the Hall of Fame, and a few for a Hall of Lame.
News
Newsarama Interviews Pat Lee
Newsarama interviewed former Dreamwave head Pat Lee. The crew jokes about missing company money and pens, noting Pat Lee was only relevant to Transformers for a few years yet is still talked about. [Source: Newsarama]
First Pictures of Clench
Pictures surfaced of Clench, an Onslaught repaint. One host wants it and likes the Shogun Warriors-style head. One host finds it not neon enough compared with the eye-searing Euro toys, and another thinks it looks like Depth Charge. [Source: not found]
The BotCon 2010 Video Gets Mixed Reactions
The BotCon 2010 promo video recreates an old G1 commercial, Cybernetic Space Cube included. Rob loves it, while another host calls it just okay and wishes it featured BotCon characters. One host suggests bringing back the commercial’s kid, Tommy Kennedy, as an adult. [Source: not found]
War for Cybertron Character Classes and Punch-Counterpunch
The War for Cybertron site added an explanation of character classes, and GameSpot offers the code TRANSFORM for free overnight shipping. Actual pictures of the Punch-Counterpunch figure show a very small new head, which one host calls microcephalic. The crew notes the rub signs and jokes about his license plate. [Source: not found]
Transformers Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
The first Hall of Fame class includes Peter Cullen, Bob Budiansky and two Japanese toy designers. The crew urges listeners to vote for Dinobot over Soundwave in the fan vote. One host found the voting form lets you click every option and submit them all at once. Ender explains that Hasbro picked four character inductees and fan-site polling picked the five nominees for the last slot. One host argues it doesn’t really matter who gets in. [Source: not found]
BotCon 2010 Plans
Ender is now going to BotCon, thanks to his wife making it a Father’s Day present. Brian, John and Rob are going too, and the crew expects good coverage for the podcast.
This Week in Transformers History
With JD out, the crew covers it: the Transformers Armada PlayStation 2 game came out in the U.S. on May 11, 2004. The crew praises the game, and its huge Tidal Wave level, while groaning about its ragdoll falls and last level. One host just got G1 Awakening for his iPad and likes it so far. The crew recalls RFC’s interview with the game’s PR rep, who knew little about it.
RFC Contest
Follow RFC on Twitter at TFRadio or on Facebook for a chance to win. First prize is a $50 Big Bad Toy Store gift credit, second is a $25 credit, and third is Transformers Animated Arcee.
Who Belongs in the Hall of Fame and the Hall of Lame
Brian’s first pick is Exvee, as one of the first to post multimedia toy reviews online. Other picks include Frank Welker, Susan Blu for her voice directing, Garry Chalk, Simon Furman, Andrew Wildman, Geoff Senior and Derrick J. Wyatt. The crew credits Bob Budiansky over Furman for creating the characters’ personalities, and expects Furman to get in eventually. For the Hall of Lame, Pat Lee and the writers of the live-action movies top the list. Rob adds a story about the writers posing with Hasbro-supplied toys and claiming they were their own. The crew would also induct the High Moon War for Cybertron team in a later year, plus Dr. Biggles-Jones, Buster Witwicky and David Sobolev. Orson Welles, Stan Bush and the line “Give me your face” round out the picks. Hall of Lame nominees include G.B. Blackrock, the mechanic and the Bumblebee miniseries artist. One host also complains about a Hero Squad big rig that does what a Transformers toy should.
Closing Notes
Brian will likely miss next week, so New Soundwave is his last show until the following RFC, which is the live show. RFC also plugs Superhero Time, Fanboy vs. Fanboy and the MMA and wrestling podcast Outside the Cage.
